Love at first sip with Clark McGuffie

No, it wasn’t a singles event, but love was definitely in the air—the love of food, the love of wine and the love of both perfectly matched.

On Feb. 18, Club members and best friends Tim Stevens of Stevens Winery and Mark McNeilly of Mark Ryan Winery joined forces with Chef Paul and the culinary team for a winemaker’s event at Polaris Grill that will be hard to match.

Starting with a brief introduction of their respective wines, Mark and Tim roamed the room and spoke with guests at their tables as the five-course menu unfolded. The pairings began with Mark’s Chardonnay, a light oaked and buttery wine that was matched with a spring roll made with Gerard & Dominique smoked salmon with grilled asparagus and an orange-tarragon reduction. The love continued with Tim’s Viognier, 424 Red Wine, Black Tongue Syrah—which for kicks actually has Tim’s tongue on the label— and moved on to Mark’s Dead Horse Red Wine Blend, a predominantly Cabernet profile with hints of allspice and dried fruits. Topping off the evening was the first vintage of his brand new dessert wine Fancy Pants. The food was equally impressive as each course moved the palate toward a state of happiness. My personal favorite was the Bloody Mary-spiked New York steak with fresh Yukon gold horseradish potatoes and tempura French beans—but the Rogue River blue cheesecake with drunken Yakima cherries wasn’t too shabby.

All these wines can be purchased at Polaris Grill. Although the tasting menu is gone, we would be more than happy to steer you to an appropriate match from our brand-new menu. Of course, if you are in mood for a field trip, they can also be sampled at Mark’s or Tim’s wineries located in Woodinville. Call them beforehand as they have specific hours, but be sure to tell them Clark sent you.

Join us this month for our Tequila Dinner or in June for a Whisky Dinner. Don’t hesitate to contact Member Events Director Kaarin Keil at 688.3384 to make reservations or for more information regarding our upcoming wine events and special dinners.
