Fitness photoFINDING STILLNESS
Meet meditation teacher Lin Lungta

Stillness. Lin Lungta knows where to find it.

In an age of smartphones, stressful commutes and constant media noise, the ability to quiet one’s mind is immeasurably precious.

“I find people are craving it,” Lin says. “What I notice is that when people meditate together, it’s actually very easy for people to settle down. When they first come in, they’re very busy, but at the end they just float out.”

Growing up in New York City, Lin studied psychology and art and became a tenured teacher in New York City’s public schools. She went to graduate school and eventually taught psychology at the college level.

While living in Manhattan in 1976, Lin discovered meditation when her friend left her a book, “Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism” by Chogyam Trungpa.

“I was a seeker,” she says. “The generation I came from wanted peace. I had marched on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr., but I realized I wasn’t at peace within myself.”

She then began to practice at a meditation center in Manhattan.

“I could see how my mind was leading me everywhere. I had no power over it,” she says.

Lin went and lived in meditation centers for the next 15 years and studied with Deepak Chopra and Andrew Cohen through the 1990s.

Nowadays, Lin brings her wealth of meditation experience to a series of workshops and classes at the Bellevue Club. She guides students through meditation practice, how to set intent and manifest desires.

“My classes provide a safe container in which people can be honest with themselves in discovering what they really desire and how to fulfill it,” she says.

In June, Lin is being recognized as the Deepak Chopra Center’s Featured Teacher of the Month. At the Bellevue Club, she teaches Meditation for Clarity every Wednesday from 1:05-1:55 p.m. in the Yoga Studio, along with monthly workshops.
