Wines to Make You Weep
Winemaking is tricky business. Although most people do not know everything that is entailed, many have tasted enough wine to know it doesn’t always come out well. However, sometimes a wine comes along that proves everything was done perfectly, a wine that takes you by surprise and makes a meal feel like a feast. It’s a wine that actually can bring a tear to your eye.
While these once-in-a-lifetime wines might vary for everyone, following are a few that are certainly worth trying.
Bouchard Père & Fils, one of Burgundy’s oldest vineyards, produced a fantastic Pinot Noir that was unforgettable. It was a wine so supple and smooth that it changed with every sip, totally enhancing a beautiful steak dinner. Rumor has it that the winery was run by nuns who exclaimed that the wine, “slips down the throat as easily as the infant Jesus in velvet pants.” True or not, the wine was rich and delicious with huge dark berry overtones and drool-inducing balance—with no velvet pants tasted.
Drinkers of this next wine might find themselves tearing up—no kidding. John Duval, the former head winemaker for Penfolds, started his own label back in 2003. His Plexus—a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre—was perfectly blended, rich and round with bright berry fruit and dark spices. Try it—you’ll realize you’ve been waiting your whole life for this wine. Syrah remains the backbone, carrying along the fruitiness of the Grenache, and Mourvèdre adds a hint of musk that would pair terrifically with a steak or even a burger. Polaris Grill’s current 2007 vintage received awards more than 90 points with all major reviewers.
Betz Family Winery Bésoleil is also a similar blend, but Grenache makes up almost 80 percent. This wine is lovely with a gorgeous opal coloring, and a huge aroma of strawberry and raspberry that is characteristic of Grenache. Betz Family wines are highly allocated and Polaris Grill is fortunate to receive an assortment of these wines.
Of course, you can’t go wrong with the classic Rhône blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, but each is wonderful alone, too. Mark Ryan’s “Crazy Mary” Mourvèdre produces a huge delicious wine full of blackberries, dried herbs and light oak. Only 100 cases were made but you can find it on the Polaris Grill boutique wine list. Pair it with Chef Paul’s veal loin for an unforgettable experience.
Although winemaking isn’t easy, these winemakers from France, Australia and the Northwest certainly make drinking their wine easy. Come to Polaris Grill and try some of these gems out. |
