Real Men Do Pilates

The question begs, what exactly is a “real” man? In the weight room, testosterone is often synonymous with bicep curls in the mirror and “maxing out” on the bench press.

But for this collection of Bellevue Club men, the Pilates Studio is where you’ll find them grunting through very manly workouts.

And they’re not alone. Professional athletes often use Pilates as a core strengthening and rehab workout to keep up with the high demands put upon their bodies week after week.

Pilates Reformer involves a collection of elegant equipment that literally works almost every muscle in your body—without stressing joints or sore muscles.

Without further ado, here are real men doing real Pilates:

York HarrisName: York R. Harris
Age: 60
Sports/Hobbies: Golf, wine, travel, student of the markets
Why Pilates: After three years of not working out, I lost a lot of my muscle tone and tired more easily. With a weak back, I was unable to play golf. Deciding to get back into shape, I called Sue (Matyas, Fitness Director). I explained my history of working out, back operations, working in a sedentary job, etc. I asked Susan if I should start with yoga and she said the most important thing to start with is your core. The best way to focus on the core was through Pilates. She said once my core was strengthened I could then entertain other alternatives. I said sign me up, and have been going for the last four months. Along with a cardio workout this really works. I have also started playing golf again.

Name: John Hilscher
Age: 46
Sports/Hobbies: running, swimming, weights, yoga, home design
Why you do Pilates: Core conditioning, balance, acrobatic opportunities, posture, flexibility maintenance.

Name:  Fred Auch
Age: 58
Sports/Hobbies: Hockey, backpacking, skiing, racquetball
Why Pilates: For flexibility and strength.

Steven GoldfarbName: Steven Goldfarb
Age: 48
Sports/Hobbies: Golf, biking, snow and water-skiing, working out
Why Pilates: It has really helped both strength and flexibility. After a session, I feel it in my core all day. But the big reason is that I saw results after four sessions.

Name: Ned Clapp
Age: 34
Sports/Hobbies: Soccer, basketball, CrossFit, golf
Why you do Pilates: I believe in a balanced approach to fitness. I like to mix in Pilates because I haven’t found anything else that is so focused on strengthening my core and improving my flexibility at the same time; two things that are crucial for explosiveness in sports. The strictness and discipline of movements to precisely target specific core muscles is in stark contrast to other forms of exercise I follow, meaning it hits muscles I just don’t sufficiently work otherwise. Initially I was skeptical that Pilates would be an effective workout because it’s relatively slow and the heart rate doesn’t get up there, but I quickly learned that the intensity can be dialed up to meet any level of fitness. Most importantly, I can feel the difference when I play sports so I know it’s helping me achieve my goal of balanced fitness.
