Outside the Lanes:
On deck with the new Aquatics Director
Ever heard of the new pool sport called “Skwim?” No? Stop by Melissa Stepp’s office and she’ll tell you all about it.
As the new Bellevue Club Aquatics Director, Melissa has spent most of her adult life near the water.
“I’ve been a lifeguard since I was 15,” she says. Growing up in the Lake Stevens area, Melissa played basketball, volleyball and track until her doctor brought some heavy news.
“I was told when I was 12 to stop high-impact sports or I’d need knee replacements,” she says. The pool became her competitive outlet and she went on to swim for the Everett Park Sharks.
“The pool is a low-impact, long term sport for me,” she says. Melissa also discovered rowing as another low-impact team sport. She raced for Everett Rowing and then for the varsity team at Smith College in Massachusetts.
Before coming to the Bellevue Club, she was the Northwest Center Redmond Pool Manager. Since coming to the
Bellevue Club, she’s made marked improvements to the swim lesson program by coordinating it with the easy-to-understand American Red Cross levels, which focus on both water safety and stroke development, as well as swim team preparation.
She plans to continue to expand the pool’s program offerings with fun events.
“My goal is to connect the members to the Aquatics Department, and the Aquatics Department to the rest of the Club,” she says.
With four months under her belt as Aquatics Director, she’s found a warm community in coworkers and members at the Bellevue Club.
“I really enjoy how welcoming the staff and membership has been,” she says.
And, if you still want to know about Skwim, you’ll have to ask her.

Strong Finishes
Swim Team earns bronze at state championships
The strong senior squad from the Bellevue Club swam their way to an overall third-place finish, right behind the Cascade Swim Club at the Washington State Championships this past December.
With 38 teams and 584 swimmers competing in the four-day event, all the top teams and swimmers from Washington were in attendance. Differing from high-school state championships where schools are divided according to size and many elite swimmers don’t even compete, the winners of this meet can truly lay claim to championship status. Although the event was canceled last year due to snow and ice, this year’s close competition more than made up for it.
Both Ethan Hallowell and Paolo Stanchi made their mark at the event by beating a pool full of hungry hopefuls in their respective events. Ethan finished first in the 50 Free, 100 Free and 200 Free, while Paolo won the 400 IM and 200 Breast. The pair also finished top 10 in four other events.
