Young swimmer makes waves in record books

Whenever Ed Kim hits the water for a butterfly event, ripples run through the record books. Over the past two years, the 14-year-old Bellevue Club Swim Team member has been quietly blasting team and state records out of the water.

“In his age group, he is one of the top in the country,” says Coach Klaas Schenk.

At age 12, Ed held the second fastest time in the United States in the 100 fly. He was also in the top 10 nationally in five other events—50 free, 100 free, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 50 fly. Four of his top times are currently Pacific Northwest records.

In the 13-14 age group, Ed has already broken six Bellevue Club team records. He recently scored the most points in his age group at the 2010 Northwest Age Group Sectional Championships and finished first in five events.

The fast times don’t just come naturally. Ed puts a lot of time in the pool with the swim team, training nearly every day for three hours.

“We swim four to five kilometers per practice,” says Ed.

How does Ed stay focused through the endless laps? “My best friends swim with me and it makes me look forward to going to practice,” he says. “Michael Stanchi and I swim next to each other and race each other sometimes.” Michael currently holds the Club’s top ranking in some of the longer freestyle short-course events.

Besides friends, Ed finds the pool provides a mental benefit.

“I like working hard, and sometimes if I’m stressed I like to swim,” he says.

His mom and dad, Minsun and Stephen Kim, encouraged him to begin swimming at an early age.

“My mom said swimming is a safe sport, and I just really started to like it,” he says. Ed’s future goals include making the senior sectionals in the 100 fly and someday swimming in the Olympics.

“It’s a very demanding sport,” says Klaas. “Ed’s determined and he trains well in the water, and those are qualities that will help him out down the road.”
