SUMMER CAMP BUTTERFLIES By Katie Anderson

Upfront PhotoNervous, excited, yet confident. That’s how I feel right now thinking about the summer ahead of us here at the Bellevue Club.

I’m a little nervous because every time I think about the first day of camp those butterflies return that have plagued me all my life. I know, I know, I should have outgrown that by now and while I’m sure you have, even the most confident of adults remembers the pre-camp jitters. Will I make any friends? Will it be fun? Please tell me my lunch isn’t gross, embarrassing or untradable. Don’t fall down, have breakfast leftovers on my face or do anything to draw undue attention to myself. Just fit in. Just fit in. Just fit in.

Now that your butterflies are fully in motion, let me tell you why I’m excited: our camp instructors are on their way here. Most have been helping out with camps here for years. Many of you know them by name and ask me about them regularly. If you’ve yet to meet them, our camp instructors love working with your kids and having fun. It’s their joy to play a role in taking a group of campers from butterfly-ridden to life-long friends. When the camp instructors hear about what we have planned for the summer they get just as excited, if not more, than the kids do. You should have seen coach Drew’s face when he learned he got to work at LEGO camp. Sarah, our super-creative extraordinaire, is overly excited to jump into Drama Camp. Taylor is always the first to ask if she can work in Kids’ Camp. Jill, our new Youth Programs Coordinator is looking forward to her first summer here at the Bellevue Club—summer camps are her specialty. You’ll even catch me joining in on a game of Pin Down (the Club’s version of dodge ball) from time to time because I simply can’t help but get up from my desk and go play.

Not only do I jump in and play from time to time, I have the privilege of planning all of the camps for my department, pulling childhood dreams into camp format. Really, who wouldn’t want to spend a week at Flag Football or Playground Games Camp (kickball, anyone)?

You might wonder how I decide what camps to offer. If an idea crosses my path and my reaction is “Wow, that would be so much fun,” I do whatever it takes to make it a Bellevue Club experience. Because of this, I’m confident that we have a camp your child will love. We have ballet for your tiny dancer, hip-hop for your budding groove kid, drama classes for your child’s inner actor ... and the list goes on.

Plan your summer with us and prepare to lose those first-day-of-camp butterflies and gain a whole bunch of new friends. For more information, visit www.bellevueclub.com/summercamps or go to the Classes and Events pages in REFLECTIONS magazine.
