BC junior members compete in Oregon

Two Bellevue Club young karate champions traveled to Gresham, Ore., for the 24th Annual Robukai NW Classic.

Analise Butler sparred her way to a third place finish in the 8- to 9-year-old Kumite division.

“Quite a feat given that many of the girls in her age group were easily a foot taller than her. She is a real fighter and competitor,” says James Penor, Bellevue Club sensei.

Caleb Cochran brought grace and strength to the weapons form and also took third in his division.

“The Classic is one of the toughest competitions in the area sanctioned by the USA Karate-do Federation,” says James.

In addition to the competition, Caleb and Analise were able to meet many of the masters of martial arts and eat dinner with them at the Saturday night banquet.

“Many of the masters had seminars to share their knowledge and techniques,” says James.

Summer Drama
Camps revamped at the Bellevue Club

A new summer camp at the Club just entered stage left. Starting in June, Broadway musicals, creative twists on fairy tales and puppetry are all on the playbill for children ages 6-11 during our brand-new Bellevue Club Drama Camps.

In Fairy Tales with a Twist, junior members will be acting out characters from their favorite fairy tales that are mixed up and re-created with hilarious conclusions. In Puppetry, children will develop skills in basic puppetry and acting. The instructor has 40 fun puppets and three puppet theaters. Lastly, Broadway Pizzazz is designed to bring out your child’s inner actor using karaoke and musical skills building.

Besides drama, the Bellevue Club is launching a new series of individual sports camps, from Flag Football to Track and Field. Recreation Director Katie Anderson is especially excited about the new Playground Games Camp for children ages 6-10.

“It’s like recess for a week,” she says. “They’ll be playing four square, kickball, wall ball, dodge ball—basically all the most fun games.”

The sports camps run from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and end with swimming in the Club pool. Camps include drills, scrimmages and skills pertaining to each week’s focus sport. Many additional camps are offered after sports camps to give working parents the option of a full day of activities for their kids.

In other camp news, the Club is also offering a new Advanced Basketball Camp with Coach Tommy Tomsic, designed for players going into grades 6-8 who are playing or wanting to play basketball at the select level.

“It’s a great opportunity to hone your skills at an advanced level,” says Katie.

Besides the popular annual camps, the Club has worked to create more classes that challenge older youth, such as the new LEGO Challenge Camp, Advanced Art Camp and an Intermediate Volleyball Camp.

From inflatable kayaking to dancing to water-skiing, the Bellevue Club is the place to be this summer for your child.
