Beauty From the Inside Out
Three foods to promote healthy skin
The old adage about chocolate and pizza directly causing acne has proven false. If only it were so simple.
Like so many things with our body, the linear cause-and-effect model rarely applies. Instead, we get a whole list of factors that may affect our body’s appearance. Although there is no quick food fix that will have your skin glowing with cherubic radiance, experts have found correlations with the foods we eat and overall skin health.
Here’s a little secret: the foods that are good for your heart, brain and waistline are also, surprise, good for your skin in the long term. While eating a basket of french fries is probably not related to that new breakout or drinking a cup of coffee has nothing to do with your new wrinkle, certain foods will help protect skin cells from damage and disintegration throughout your lifetime.
“Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it absorbs nutrients both internally and externally,” says Susan Shorett, The Spa at the Bellevue Club’s director. “What’s good for you inside is good for you on the outside.”
Go nuts, seriously. While the term “essential fatty acid” is batted around casually in the health media, they really do help keep cell membranes healthy. As passageways for nutrients and waste products, the stronger your cell membranes, the healthier looking your skin will be in the long term. Try a handful of walnuts or flax seeds on a salad for a good daily source of omega-3.
The beautiful berry. Antioxidants are another buzzword and berries have them in spades. Beyond the buzz, antioxidants provide real benefits to protect cells from damage, bolster the body’s immune system, fight against premature aging and discourage acne. Add blueberries to your oatmeal or snack on strawberries to get your daily fix.
Tea time. Okay, you caught us—this isn’t a food. But you should still consume copious quantities of green tea every day for skin health. Calming and anti-inflammatory, watch your stress levels and your skin-cell health improve by consuming at least two cups per day.
New Antioxidant Facial from The Spa
Antioxidants are critical for any anti-aging skin care regiment. Beyond simply consuming antioxidant-rich foods, applying topicals are also important in providing ample protection from the destructiveness of the oxidizing process on skin cells.
Consider antioxidants your natural defense against accelerated aging and skin damage.
