Like Father, Like Kid
Exploring the father factor of fitness
Whether it’s skiing, tennis or basketball, many fathers often equate fatherhood with giving up the active hobbies that they enjoy for the sake of the family. It’s what a good father should do, right?
The research begs to differ. Study after study shows the positive effects of a healthy, involved father.
“Healthy fathers equal healthy children—plain and simple,” says Sue Matyas, Bellevue Club Fitness Director. “The kids grow up seeing their parents staying active, and it’s instilled in them at an early age as something important to strive for.”
A recent study published by the Australian Department of Medicine looked at family lifestyle over a nine-year period. It found that a father’s body mass index (BMI) was a determining factor for the child’s BMI, independent of the offspring’s alcohol intake, smoking and father’s education.
That same study found that the BMI in sons and daughters was consistently higher when fathers were overweight or obese.
In some studies, researchers found that the father’s physical fitness is a better indicator in determining a child’s fitness levels. According to the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State, a daughter’s BMI could be predicted by the father’s diet and enjoyment of physical activity. Likewise, another study found that the father’s total and percentage body fat was the best predictor of changes in a daughter’s total and percentage body fat.
“It’s so important for fathers to take the time to stay in shape. So many men put their own wellness on the backburner for the sake of their family and work life, and it can just burn them out,” says Sue.
If your wellness has gotten away from you, take this Father’s Day to sit down with a Bellevue Club personal trainer and figure out a plan to keep your body and mind fit, as you tackle all of life’s challenges. Your family will thank you.
