Swim Team seniors head for higher education
It’s no secret that Bellevue Club swimmers excel in the pool and the classroom.
This past May, the Bellevue Club Swim Team held their annual awards banquet to celebrate all the hard work of swimmers and parents during the year.
Amongst the laughs and congratulations, the coaching staff announced the recipient of the Paul E. Tsongas Bumblebee Award, which goes to the wimmer whose participation symbolizes commitment to competitive excellence and their fellow teammates.
“It’s basically the hardest-working kid on the team,” says senior coach Andy Pym.
With that in mind, this year’s prestigious award went to Matthew Wiens.
“He’s a self-made swimmer and respected by every other member of the team,” says Andy. “His gift is his ability to push himself.”
Matthew had a relatively late start to year-round swimming, but he has developed into one of the team’s top distance freestylers.
“He embodies the term work ethic, and he has an incredible tolerance for pain,” says Andy.
An excellent student as well, Matthew is planning to swim for Tufts University next year as a freshman.
“He has the same tenacious spirit with everything he applies himself to,” Andy says.
