Finding Freedom
Addiction and honesty collide in member’s life
It could happen to anyone. With the physique of a linebacker and a thoughtful, steady gaze, Bellevue Club member and successful business owner Tim Peacock is a formidable presence in any room. But underneath the peripheral lies an honest tale that brought him to his knees and back again.
A lifelong athlete and successful contractor, Tim developed an excruciatingly painful shattered disc through overuse. Six years ago, his doctor prescribed him Percocet for his back pain—a standard practice.
“I have a business and a family, I couldn’t just stop and sit around all day,” Tim says.
While waiting a year and a half for a new experimental replacement disc surgery, he continued taking the prescription painkillers.
“The pills were increasing—I was quickly forming a major habit,” he says. “As my tolerance was building, I’m taking more of them, while feeling more and more daily pain.”
After Tim finally received his surgery, getting off the pills proved to be nearly impossible, even with a clinical detox program.
“The doctors tried to ween me off, but it’s basically like a heroin addiction,” he says. “You’re just kind of in a fog, it’s so deceptive.”
After devastating impacts to both his family and business, Tim finally checked himself into a Lakeside-Milam Recovery Center, which he sees as a transformative moment.
“It was an eye-opener. Those pills took me down to my knees. I learned a lot about myself as a person, and received a new life. I started to live my life on different principles,” he says. “My values are so different today. It’s not all about work and making money, it’s about relationships, family and service to others.”
Today, at 41, Tim also pays much closer attention to his health.
“Before I hadn’t taken care of my body at all, it just wasn’t one of my priorities,” he says. After he got out of his treatment program, he began training with Bellevue Club personal trainer Ramses Chmait and lost 45 pounds. He still works out for two hours, three days a week, and sees it as an essential part of his daily recovery.
“It’s overall training, working on my core to alleviate any back problems. Now I have no back pain whatsoever,” he says. “In terms of the natural endorphins, it’s essential, and it just makes me feel good.”
Tim also volunteers at treatment centers and helps others get through their addictions.
“I talk at treatment centers, sharing my experience with opiate and alcohol abuse. There’s so much shame and guilt with it for people,” he says. “I was miserable for many years there, what I’ve experienced has changed my life. What I have today is complete freedom—
it’s priceless.”
