BC Swimmers Carve the Pumpkin 400
Pride and pumpkin pie was on the line this past October when Bellevue Club swimmers, parents and coaches all donned their racing suits for the annual Pumpkin 400.
With a crowd of onlookers spilling onto the pool deck, more than 200 swimmers of all ages completed the eight grueling laps of freestyle in the competition pool.
“I just wanted to break five minutes to prove that I’m not too old yet,” said Andy Pym, Bellevue Club Swim Team assistant coach. Andy finished at 4:57.26 for fourth place in the “Old People’s” division for everyone 19 and older. Bellevue Club Masters coach and former Olympian Chris Chalmers finished first in the division at 4:35.03.
Other division winners included Marisa Chang, Meghan O’Keefe, Ian Fisk, Makena Sutich, Ed Kim, Marley Cross, Daniel Sandler, Jessica Mead, A.J. Rossman, Paloma Baca and William Paxton. Ian Fisk finished with the quickest time of the night at 4:10.03 with Steve Sholdra less than a second behind him.
Division winners all received a pie for their efforts.
“It’s one of the rare times of the year when everyone, parents and coaches included, gets to compete,” Andy said. “It’s really fun.”
Swim Lessons Go Red Cross
Whether your child wants to be the next Michael Phelps or you simply want them to be safe near the pool at a young age, the Bellevue Club Aquatics Department’s youth swim lessons will provide your child with a solid foundation of water skills.
This month, in order to improve the program and make lesson levels easier to understand, the Club is switching to the official American Red Cross swim lesson curriculum used by aquatics and swim team programs across the country.
“The old program primarily focused on getting kids ready for swim team, but we want parents to know that the goal of the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program is to get every child water safe—a crucial part of growing up,” says Melissa Stepp, the new Aquatics Director. “Of course, our advanced program will still teach advanced strokes to produce top swim competitors, but this switch just makes sense.”
The Red Cross program utilizes an easy-to-understand level program, starting at Level 1 and going through Level 6. Level 1 introduces kids to basic water skills, focusing on comfort and safety, while Level 6 focuses on fitness swimming and swim team prep.
“Each level builds seamlessly off the other,” says Melissa.
The four-week sessions offer morning, afternoon and evening classes for flexible schedules. For more information or to enroll in swim lessons, call 688.3127.
