Kick Off Your Super Bowl Party in Style
By Jayme Kennedy
Whether or not you’re a sports fan, the Super Bowl has ascended to unofficial national holiday status in the United States. And why wouldn’t it? Combine friends, football and truckloads of dip and you have the recipe for a legendary party. On February 7, Super Bowl XLIV will be hosted in sunny south Florida at the infamous Dolphins Stadium in Miami Gardens. More than 120,000 people will flood Miami to take part in the Super Bowl festivities and excitement, and approximately 75,540 will be lucky enough to attend the game.
If you’re not one of the lucky few able to attend the big game, why not throw a Super Bowl party of your own? We’ve got a few foolproof tips and ideas for your own Super Bowl party that will make your gathering burst with team spirit. So invite over some friends and join the 141 million viewers who are partaking in this American tradition.
The Setting
Make sure that you create the right flow—have the food near a TV so that none of your guests have to miss a play to grab a bite or refill a drink. Or consider putting a smaller TV next to the bar and snacks. Keep in mind the focus of the whole afternoon is to watch the game and not miss a beat.
Decorate your house in the colors of the team for whom you’re rooting. If you’re going to have guests who are rooting for different teams, establish a line down the center of the room with masking tape to heighten the rivalry. Decorate each side with team colors using pennants, crepe paper streamers and pompoms.

The Menu
Some of the traditional party foods served at Super Bowl parties include chips and dip, popcorn, chili, buffalo wings, pizza and sub sandwiches. Try preparing gourmet versions of some of Super Bowl staples, such as turkey chili with white beans, grilled panini sandwiches and spicy seven-layer dip.
The Bar
Try serving up a signature cocktail. Spice up your favorite drink by re-naming it in the spirit of the game, such as “Kick Off” or “Hail Mary.” Of course, be sure to have plenty of bottled beer available, and keep it in an ice chest near the TV for convenience. Remember that most of your guests have to work the next day so don’t forget to provide plenty of bottled water, fruit juice and soda as well.
The Extras
A few other ideas to make your party fun: Organize a football pool where all of your guests “buy” squares. Then at the end of each quarter, award money to the square winner based on the game score.
Have plenty of soft football toys around for your guests to throw at the TV set when the referees make bad calls.
Enjoy the game! |
