Heart Healthy Travel
Sure, eating healthy, exercising and managing stress might be part of your daily routine at home, but what about while you’re on the road?

Since February is American Heart Month, there has never been a better time to pay attention to your heart health. While heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States, risks can be mitigated through healthy lifestyle choices—many of which seem impossible in hotels and airports.

Although limited food options and frenzied schedules become a permission statement to relax diet standards and avoid exercise, there is hope for heart-healthy travelers. Check out these tips for ways you can stay heart healthy while jet setting.
  • Pack heart-healthy snacks. We all know how hard it is to find healthy options when you’re in a strange city. By combining plenty of water with some healthy snacks you can help avoid overeating and less heart- friendly meal options.
  • Remember your vitamins and medications. When you’re on a trip and swooping in and out of different time zones it’s difficult to stay consistent with medication dosages. It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s amazing how many people forget their medications when they’re out of a normal routine. One easy way to remember is to set a daily timer on your watch or phone.
  • Bring workout gear and take advantage of the hotel gym or in-room equipment. While guests at Hotel Bellevue have full use of our extensive facilities and programs, most hotels have at least some kind of exercise room. If you’re not comfortable with working out in hotel gyms and they don’t offer an in-room option, ask a Bellevue Club personal trainer to design a special workout that you can do in your room.
  • Take a walk! Get to know the city you’re visiting by walking around. Ask the hotel concierge for or look up key sightseeing destinations and nearby walking paths and go explore.
  • Get some rest. If you have trouble sleeping, ask your doctor about some options for when you’re traveling. Sleep is vital to staying healthy and maintaining weight loss. Hotels also have many options for customizing your bed comfort, so if your bed isn’t to your liking don’t be afraid to ask.

Early detection can be the key to saving your life. Even if you don’t think you’re at risk, it could help save the life of someone close to you as well.
Wishing you safe and healthy travels!
