Debra Mason brings elements of design to junior members

Mention macaroni art and Bellevue Club art teacher Debra Mason just laughs. Instead, she has kids exploring the elements of design with a variety of mediums from acrylics to pastels.

“My curriculum is pretty advanced. Every lesson, I’m teaching them how to draw and use different mediums,” she says.

Different from most children’s art teachers, Debra has a strong background in commercial graphic design and art direction. After attending design schools in Portland and Seattle, Debra worked for 20 years creating logos and branding large companies.

When she had kids of her own, she scaled back her commercial work and eventually began teaching art.

“The strength in my teaching is having that knowledge that I’ve learned in my design schools,” she says.

She also teaches full-time as an art teacher at the Bear Creek School in Redmond, but prefers the condensed format of her Bellevue Club summer camps.

“It’s ideal. In a two-hour class, they are able to finish a piece of art every class,” she says.
“In the weeklong camps, they take home five pieces of finished art in one week.”

During the past eight years at the Club, Debra has built relationships with young artists and their parents.

“I have a lot of repeat kids. It’s amazing seeing the growth in their character and their art. I don’t know what it is, but I have a lot of Bellevue Club kids who are really talented,” she says.

Although she has repeat students, Debra welcomes first-timers.

“One of my goals is to silence any fears in a child or even in an adult about art,” she says. “I love the van Gogh quote, ‘If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.’”
