Shut-Eye for Skin Health

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your skin is to simply take a nap. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, nearly 40 million Americans have chronic sleep conditions and one in three Americans has trouble falling or staying asleep on any given night.

Adults need seven to ten hours of sleep per night, but the average American adult is only sleeping 6.4 hours. This ever-increasing sleep debt has disastrous effects on memory, the immune system and skin health.

Dark circles, fine lines and sagging skin are the symptoms. Loss of cellular water and lack of cell and tissue repair are the causes. Both are maximized in the deepest stages of rest throughout the night, which is difficult to attain with limited or interrupted nights.

“Skin is not an isolated organ,” says Susan Shorett, Spa Director. “Skin care products and treatments work much more effectively when you address underlying issues, such as sleep deprivation or sun exposure.”

Contact your doctor if you think you have a chronic sleep disorder. In the meantime, try these tips for a healthy night’s sleep and beautiful skin in the morning.

• Avoid caffeine four to six hours before bedtime.
• Go to bed at the same time each night.
• Limit alcohol beverages.
• Exercise regularly.
• Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to see if any medications could be disrupting your sleep.
• Eat well, but not too much.
• Leave your worries behind. Make to-do lists at your desk and leave your obligations there. Sleep is crucial to handle the stresses of the day.
• Manage your stress.
