Head north this summer for some family time. Seattle City Light’s Skagit River Hydroelectric Project and Diablo Lake offer boating tours, boat-in camping, walking tours, dinner packages and more. Just a three-hour drive northeast of Seattle, centered in the North Cascades around Newhalem, Wash., the power project has been in operation since 1918. The area encompases a number of hikes including the Trail of Cedars, a half-mile hike through old-forest groves and the Gorge Overlook Trail that provides views of waterfalls and the Gorge dam (pictured). Visitors can also view Diablo Lake, created by the Diablo Dam and filled with glacial water; Ladder Creek Falls; “Old Number Six,” a restored Baldwin Steam Engine; and a general store built in 1922 that
some people say serves the best fudge around. For more information about the area and its sights, visit www.skagittours.com or www.seattle.com/light/tours/skagit/sk5_sght.htm.
