Just west of Interstate 5 in Federal Way sits one of the last remaining bogs
in south Puget Sound—the West Hylebos Wetlands. The wetlands consist
of 69 acres of swampy, wooded land that is full of plant and animal life.
A walk along the one-mile boardwalk through the wetlands gives visitors the chance to see 27 species of moss, 37 species of lichen, 30 species of fungi,
Douglas firs, western hemlocks, red cedars, Sitka spruce, more than 100 bird species, frogs, coyotes and possibly baby Coho salmon. Friends of the Hylebos Wetlands, the nonprofit
conservation organization that helps preserve the area, will have various activities for Earth Day on Saturday, April 21. For more information, visit www.hylebos.org.
