  PICK HIS TIES
Scientists have found a color vision gene on the X chromosome. This gives women two copies: If one’s bad, there’s a fallback; with two good genes, they’ll see stark contrasts between, say, coral and rose. Men get one copy, so they’re lucky if they can tell red from green.

  THE TRAINER ADVANTAGE
The investment in a personal trainer pays off immediately. When 50 students at McMaster University in
Ontario squeezed a handgrip, the ones who had goals set by a fitness pro compressed nearly three pounds more than those who set their own goals. Researchers believe an expert can instill a sense of confidence. “It’s an issue of credibility,” says study author Kathleen Martin Ginis, Ph.D. “When a knowledgeable person says, ‘You can do better,’ you’re more inclined to believe it.”

  THE PRICE OF KNEE PAIN
Knee pain can be caused by injuries, arthritis, or being overweight. For relief, try PRICE:

PROTECT from further injury by wearing a knee brace.
REST the knee by avoiding activities that cause pain.
ICE the knee for 15 minutes every few hours.
COMPRESS the area with an elastic bandage to reduce swelling.
ELEVATE the knee above the heart, especially at night.
