  HOLIDAY WORKOUT
Don’t let holiday travel interrupt your workout. Try this 10-minute do-anywhere move. It sculpts legs, biceps,
shoulders and core. Stand on the center of a resistance band, feet slightly more than hip-width apart. Grasp
the ends of the band, arms down by sides. Bend knees 90 degrees into a squat position. Straighten legs and
bend elbows to bring fists to shoulders. Next, raise arms overhead. Return to starting position; repeat 8 to 10
times.

  GET IN LINE, IN-LINE
Plain old roller skates are burning up the pavement. Skating is the theme of three movies this year, not to mention a Roller Derby reality show, a bunch of commercials and a whole crew of music videos. Hey, whatever it takes to get you moving.

  DOG WALKS HELP LOSE WEIGHT
Dogs may be more than man’s best friend; they may also be a tool for losing weight, according to a recent
University of Missouri study that shows making a commitment to walk a dog—your own or someone
else’s—leads to increased exercise and weight loss. The dog-walkers in the study started by walking 10 minutes per day three times per week and eventually walked up to 20 minutes per day 5 days per week. One group walked for 50 weeks while another walked for only 26 weeks. The 50-week walkers lost an average of 14 pounds during the one-year program.

Health Notes Photo   FENDING OFF WINTER GERMS
Health experts suggest some simple measures for keeping your family healthy this winter.
  • Put everyone’s toothbrushes in the dishwasher once a week to sanitize them.
  • Use disposable cups in the bathroom.
  • Wash towels and washcloths with hot water and detergent once a week and don’t share them.
  • If someone is ill, disinfect the surfaces he or she may have touched. Use a dilute bleach solution (1 part bleach to 30 parts water) to wash down the telephone receiver, stair railing, remote control, doorknobs and refrigerator door.

KEEP KIDS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Here are some holiday tips to keep your kids safe during the holidays:
  • Keep all plants out of reach of children. Poinsettias can cause skin irritation and severe stomach symptoms. Mistletoe berries are poisonous—as are many plants.
  • If a buffet is served, make sure that all foods that could cause choking in children, such as peanuts, grapes and cherry tomatoes are placed in the center of the buffet, out of reach of small hands.

  • Keep children away from alcoholic drinks.
  • Lock basement doors and put up safety gates to prevent falls.
